There may be no sweeter words for non-Christian sinner than “no condemnation.” But what about for the Christian who sins?
[Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.]
A condemned person is one that is awaiting punishment. After the jury finds him guilty, the judge issues the sentence. Now the guilty person is condemned. Since there is no condemnation now, then there is no punishment awaiting the Christian – even when he sins.
The Christian should not continue thinking that she is condemned because now there is “no condemnation.” This is very important for the Christian. Many people believe that the non-Christian needs to hear the message of no condemnation. This is true. But the Christian also needs to hear the message of no condemnation.
The Christian still sins and may think that because she is still sinning that she has returned to a position of condemnation. This is not true!
Christians are free from the old law of sin and death and the condemnation that came with it. We live under the law of the Spirit of life. We do not return to condemnation when we sin. The case for this strong as we’ll see in Romans 8:3-4.
